New job, movies, games, book and more ... though not a whole lot
First off, let's start about a week and two days from now. It had a lot of driving in it. I also had the pleasure of seeing a good friend. Unfortunately, I have not seen her since. Immediately the next day I started my new temporary job. I won't say exactly who I work for but I will say what I do. I lovingly move boxes, of varying sizes and shapes, out of a large semi-truck trailer and onto a conveyor belt. I say lovingly but I don't mean it at all. The first few days were excruciating, pain wise. My back, arms, not so much my legs and surprisingly my fingers were sore. As the days have gone by the pain has receded. And now after 6 days of work; only my back, arms and fingers hurt. Albeit not as bad. Nothing fun or exciting happens at my new job. Mostly I'm hastily trying to throw ... I mean place as man packages onto the belt as possible. The bosses come by every once in a while and tell me to go faster. I just say "sure" and continue like I was. It's an excellent workout, I hope, about 4-5 hours of hurriedly picking up and placing 0-70lbs as fast as possible. I say 70lbs, because above that weight one can ask for assistance. But I don't. The heavy boxes have the weight posted on them and every once in a while I happen to get a look at them when I'm flinging them this way and that. The heaviest one I remember was 134lbs. Doesn't seem like that much, but I assure you, it is when you're trying to muscle it from the floor to a conveyor that is at your shoulder level after three hours of doing the same thing to lesser packages. I'd say the average weight of a package is about 20lbs. Enough of the job itself.
In order to go to this new job of mine I have to awaken at 3am and since I need to wake up then I need to go to sleep at about 8pm or else I'm grumpy. This is not advantageous to a happy social Me who gets to spend a lot of time with his wife and friends ... make that: his wife's friends, it’s more accurate. At any rate I spend the day alone with Star Trek and my computer. I of course am writing a very long paper, which I do not want to do.
I have found time in the last week to indulge in some recreation, oddly enough it is during the time in which I spend with my wife. A more logical recreation time would be when I'm alone so my time with my wife can be more ... efficiently utilized. At any rate, I've gotten a couple new games, started a new book, watched a couple movies I haven't seen before, and some other things perhaps.
A few months ago I purchased MASH the book, not to be confused with the movie or the very fine television show. I finally started reading it this week and I'm about half way through it and it's great. Though disappointing. I must say, it's an easy read. One could most certainly finish it in a day. But I like to spread my enjoyment out like butter. That and I grow bored of having fun. Weird. It's great because it's well written, good thing since it was published, and the characters are great. The book focuses on three main characters and their little adventures, there is no underlying plot other than, I suppose, the war in which they are participating and the fact that it is in chronological order or their adventures. But I like that. I see no reason for there to be a plot. Anyway, I'm disappointed because I thought the book would be laugh out loud funny. It very well might be for someone reading it 30-40 years ago. Much of the 'slang' I don't quite get and the vague references a little too vague for me, the dense. But it is humorous with the usual MASH flair for caring for life.
I also got a couple videogames. One I have played and one I have not, yet. The one I have played is God of War. Having seen videos and read reviews of this game I knew I would enjoy it. But I didn't feel it warranted a $50 commitment on my part. Instead I thought I'd just wait for it to get cheap and if I remembered it, then, well, I would buy it. And that time has come. The story is ... well, who cares about that but let me say it's interesting in an action movie kind of way. This game is violent, like most, but it doesn't pussyfoot around the violence like other games, adding sparks or bubbles where blood should be, no. It's complete in it Mature rating right down to manly grunts provided by the main character. Blood and masculinity aside, it is in fact a fun game (information I was privy to prior to possession). Lots of cool moves and "innovative" timed button presses allow for satisfying game play. And it has its platform elements which don't seemed too forced and are fun in and of themselves. It reminds me a lot of the Maximo games, which I really liked. But Maximo wasn't bloody, it was just fun. God of War is fun AND bloody. Oh yeah, and there's computer generated boobs, if that's your thing. Didn't do anything for me. I prefer boobs that are real and attached to a pretty woman.
And finally movies. Fist up is Nanook of the North. A 1922 documentary of an Eskimo and his family. I sadly didn't pay too much attention. It wasn't entirely my fault. The company I was with didn't encourage much attention either. Nevertheless, it was educational and impressive for such an old movie. I recommend it, but be advised: go in wanting to pay attention.
I also saw Fargo. I'm not sure if I liked it. It was a good movie. But also disturbing. Well shot. Good acting.
And with that I will leave you.
